Who Is Landon DuPont? A Quick Introduction

Landon DuPont is a Canadian ice hockey player who currently plays defence for the Everett Silvertips of the Western Hockey League. Born on May 28, 2009, in Calgary, Alberta, he’s the kind of prospect that scouts and analysts don’t just like they rave about. As of June 2026, he’s 17 years old, and he’s already a household name in hockey circles across North America.

What separates DuPont from other gifted teenagers isn’t just his skill set. It’s the combination of maturity, hockey IQ, and physical presence that makes him look like he belongs no matter who he’s playing against or how big the stage gets.

Age and Early Life: A Hockey Kid From Day One

Landon DuPont was born on May 28, 2009, making him 17 years old as of 2026. He grew up in a deeply hockey-rooted household, and from early childhood, the rink was practically his second home. What’s particularly fascinating about his development is that it happened across multiple countries. DuPont played youth hockey in Kloten, Switzerland and Berlin, Germany, often competing with his older brother in the 2006-born age group a full three years above his own. Playing up against older, stronger, more experienced players from such a young age forged a toughness and adaptability in him that simply cannot be taught.

He moved back to Canada in 2019, and it wasn’t long before the hockey world started to take serious notice. His time in Europe didn’t hold him back if anything, it accelerated his growth as a player.

Physique: Built for the Modern Game

Landon DuPont is not your average teenager in terms of build. He stands 5-foot-11 and weighs approximately 183 pounds, with a frame that continues to fill out as he matures physically. His size is complemented by exceptional skating ability and the kind of mobility you’d typically associate with a forward, not a blueliner.

Scouts and analysts who’ve watched him closely have pointed out that he can physically handle the demands of the WHL far better than most exceptional status players could at a similar age. One scout put it bluntly, noting that DuPont should probably be even more selfish with the puck, given how well he reads plays and creates scoring chances. His physicality isn’t just about size it’s about how he uses his body to protect the puck and dominate his defensive zone. He shoots right, which adds another dimension to his offensive game from the blue line.

Family Background: Hockey Is in His Blood

If you’re wondering where DuPont’s passion for the sport comes from, look no further than his father. Micki DuPont, Landon’s father, played over 350 games at the AHL level and had multiple stints in the NHL, totalling 23 games with teams including the Calgary Flames, Pittsburgh Penguins, and St. Louis Blues, before finishing his career in Germany and Switzerland. That’s not just a hockey background that’s a professional pedigree. Micki has also served as Landon’s coach at points in his development, which speaks to the closeness of their relationship both on and off the ice.

Landon’s older brother Nolan DuPont has also played hockey, so the DuPont family is, through and through, a hockey family. Growing up with a father who played at the highest level meant Landon had access to guidance, mentorship, and real-world professional wisdom from the moment he first laced up his skates. That environment matters enormously in shaping a player’s mindset.

    Relationship Status and Personal Life

Landon DuPont is 17 years old and, understandably, keeps his personal life largely private. There is no public information available about a romantic relationship, which is entirely appropriate given his age. He has no children. Right now, his focus is squarely on hockey, and by all accounts from coaches, teammates, and media observers that dedication is total and unwavering.

He comes across in interviews as grounded, mature, and refreshingly humble for someone receiving this level of national attention. That’s not an accident. It reflects both his upbringing and the kind of young man he’s chosen to be.

Achievements: A Career That’s Already Historic

    Exceptional Player Status

This is where DuPont’s story truly becomes extraordinary. In April 2024, Landon DuPont became just the ninth player in Canadian Hockey League history to be granted Exceptional Player Status by Hockey Canada. This is an incredibly rare distinction. Since the exceptional player status was first instituted in 2005, only nine players have successfully risen to that status: John Tavares, Aaron Ekblad, Connor McDavid, Sean Day, Joe Veleno, Shane Wright, Connor Bedard, Michael Misa, and Landon DuPont. The names on that list speak for themselves.

DuPont also became just the third defenceman in Canadian Hockey League history to be granted Exceptional Player Status. The previous two were Aaron Ekblad the first overall pick in the 2014 NHL Draft and Sean Day. To be in that company as a teenager is almost incomprehensible.

WHL Rookie of the Year and Record-Setting Season

In his WHL debut season with the Everett Silvertips, DuPont wasted absolutely no time making an impact. He finished with 17 goals and 43 assists in 64 games played and won the Jim Piggott Memorial Trophy as the WHL’s Rookie of the Year. Then, on a league-wide scale, he was awarded the CHL Rookie of the Year trophy, becoming only the third exceptional status player so honoured, after John Tavares and Shane Wright. The CHL also named him to its All-Rookie and Third All-Star teams.

    Scott Niedermayer Territory

During that same rookie season, DuPont hit a milestone that placed him alongside one of hockey’s all-time greats. On February 2, 2025, he recorded his 50th point of the season, becoming the first defenceman aged 16 or younger to reach that threshold since Scott Niedermayer in the 1989–90 season. Niedermayer, of course, went on to win four Stanley Cups and a Norris Trophy. The comparison isn’t just flattering it’s historically significant.

    2025–26 Season: Even Better

Rather than resting on his rookie-year success, DuPont elevated his game in year two. In the 2025–26 season, he posted 18 goals and 55 assists for 73 points in 63 games played, with a plus/minus of +59. That’s the second-highest scoring season any 16-year-old defenceman has ever posted in the WHL a jaw-dropping stat that puts him in truly elite historical company.

    2026 Memorial Cup: Centre Stage

Perhaps nothing has crystallized DuPont’s “big moment” gene quite like his performance at the 2026 Memorial Cup. He put up 23 points in 18 playoff games during the WHL championship run and then carried that momentum onto the Memorial Cup stage.

After sitting out with an undisclosed injury, celebrating his 17th birthday, and then scoring twice including the game-winner in the Memorial Cup semifinal, DuPont delivered one of the most talked-about performances of the tournament. With those goals, he became just the second exceptional status player in CHL history to score at a Memorial Cup, joining Joe Veleno, who scored three times in 2017.

DuPont was named to the 2026 Memorial Cup All-Star Team as one of the tournament’s two standout defencemen. The Everett Silvertips went on to win the franchise’s first-ever Memorial Cup championship and DuPont was right in the middle of every key moment.

Net Worth: Still Building, But the Future Is Bright

As a 17-year-old junior hockey player, Landon DuPont has not yet signed an NHL contract. His estimated career earnings in the professional sense currently stand at zero dollars, as he plays in the WHL and has not yet entered the NHL. That number is going to change dramatically very soon.

DuPont is eligible for the 2027 NHL Entry Draft, and he is widely projected to go first overall. That means a high-end entry-level contract, endorsement opportunities, and a professional career that could easily see him earn tens of millions over the course of a decade. While it would be irresponsible to put a precise dollar figure on his current net worth, the trajectory is as clear as it gets in hockey scouting circles. He is the most coveted draft-eligible prospect in the world right now.

Recent Activities: Making History in Real Time

The summer of 2026 finds Landon DuPont at the very peak of his junior career. After winning the WHL championship with the Everett Silvertips, DuPont and his team competed at the Memorial Cup in Kelowna, B.C., advancing all the way to the final against the Kitchener Rangers. His quote heading into that final said everything about his mentality: “It’s cool being the underdog. It’s cool proving people wrong, and I think we’ve been doing that all year.”

Beyond the ice, conversations around DuPont’s future continue to swirl, including discussions about potential NCAA pathways, which reflect just how broadly he’s being tracked across North American hockey. His NCAA future has highlighted junior hockey’s rapidly changing landscape, as DuPont remains one of the most talked-about young players in the sport.

With the 2027 NHL Draft on the horizon, every game he plays now adds another chapter to what is already shaping up to be one of the most remarkable junior hockey stories Canada has produced in years. Landon DuPont isn’t just a prospect he’s the future of the game, and that future is arriving faster than anyone expected.
